Volume profile
Definition
Volume profile histograms traded volume by PRICE LEVEL rather than by time: which prices transacted heavily (high-volume nodes — acceptance) and which barely traded (low-volume nodes — rejection or fast passage). Derived from Peter Steidlmayer’s Market Profile work at the CBOT, it reframes the session as an auction distribution — where value was built, not just where price went.
How it works / structure
- Construction: bucket volume by price over a window (session, week, composite); the profile’s mode is the point of control (POC); the central ~70% of volume spans the value area (VA high/low) — Market Profile vocabulary the platform adopts as descriptive terms.
- Parameters (engine-executable): window/anchor, price bucket size, value-area fraction (70% convention), and the signal conventions — acceptance/rejection at prior nodes (does price hold inside a high-volume node or traverse a low-volume gap quickly), POC retests, profile-shape classification (balanced vs trending distributions).
- Auction logic: high-volume nodes mark prices where both sides transacted at size (consensus value — expected to slow revisits); low-volume nodes mark prices the market rejected quickly (expected to traverse fast on revisit). These are hypotheses about dealer/participant memory, mechanically testable per convention.
When it applies
Level construction for intraday and swing setups (breakout
targets across low-volume gaps — strategy-breakout; fade
locations at prior value-area edges); context classification
(inside prior value = rotation expected; outside = discovery);
futures session analysis where the auction framing originated
(ms-sessions-auctions).
Risk profile & failure modes
- Convention sprawl: bucket size, window, and VA fraction are all fitted parameters; profiles redrawn until they “explain” the session are unfalsifiable narrative.
- Regime dependence: node acceptance/rejection behavior in rotational regimes does not transfer to trend days — the profile describes where volume WAS, not where it will be.
- Data fidelity: price-bucketed volume needs finer data
than bar closes; replay claims are bounded by feed
granularity (same constraint as
strategy-day-trading-styles). - Folk determinism: “price always returns to the POC” is folklore, labeled.
Evidence & limits
Market Profile’s constructions are exchange-documented educational material (CME) and originator exposition (Steidlmayer); peer-reviewed tests of profile-based rules are essentially absent. The platform treats the profile as a descriptive statistic of realized liquidity (uncontroversial) and every predictive convention on it as unproven-until- replayed.
Falsifiable-thesis examples
Illustrations only, not signals:
- “X, breaking above a low-volume gap between P1 and P2, will traverse to P2 within 2 sessions” — falsified by the path.
- “Retests of yesterday’s POC hold within half the value-area width in at least 60% of rotation-classified sessions this quarter” — falsified by the tally.
