Playbooks & setups
Definition
A setup is a named, specified market condition with an associated action plan — “this pattern, in this context, traded this way, with this risk” — and a playbook is a trader’s curated collection of them. The discipline (canonized in proprietary-desk training — Bellafiore’s text is the standard exposition) converts trading from improvisation into a repertoire: a finite set of rehearsed situations, each with entry criteria, sizing, invalidation, and management specified in advance, and everything OUTSIDE the repertoire declined by default. For this platform, playbooks are literally the strategy library — each KB strategy entry is a setup template with parameters.
How it works / structure
- The setup specification (engine-native): name and
taxonomy tag; CONTEXT conditions (regime, liquidity,
calendar — the filters that gate eligibility,
regime-volatilityconditioning); TRIGGER conditions (the specific configuration that fires entry —strategy-breakoutandstrategy-mean-reversionentries are worked examples); INVALIDATION (the level or condition that proves the setup failed — the stop’s logic,mgmt-stop-loss); management script (targets, trails, time exits); and the sizing class (risk-fixed-fractionaltier by setup quality). - The curation loop (where the discipline lives):
setups earn playbook membership through samples
(
disc-journaling-reviewcohort statistics by setup tag); underperformers are cut, new candidates run at minimum size until evidenced — the playbook is a living document underdisc-trading-plan’s amendment rule. - The decline-by-default rule (the discipline’s teeth): opportunities outside the playbook are not taken, however compelling — the documented desk finding (labeled practitioner) is that unplanned trades dominate loss ledgers; the rule converts FOMO into a filing (the platform’s version: an agent logging an unhandled pattern as a research candidate, never as a trade).
- The rehearsal function: specified setups can be replayed, backtested, and drilled — the platform’s simulation engine is the rehearsal room; unspecified intuitions cannot be rehearsed, which is the argument for specification restated.
When it applies
Strategy-library construction (the platform’s exact architecture — every live strategy is a specified setup); intraday and swing execution (the repertoire model is documented desk practice at those horizons); research triage (patterns observed but unspecified enter the candidate pipeline, not the trade blotter); account reviews (setup-level statistics are the unit of performance analysis).
Risk profile & failure modes
- Repertoire sprawl: dozens of half-evidenced setups defeat the concept — the documented form is few setups, deeply known; curation is subtraction.
- Context blindness: triggers fired outside their context conditions (a breakout setup in a mean-reverting regime) are different trades wearing the setup’s name — the context gate is half the specification.
- Improvisation leakage (the signature failure):
out-of-playbook trades creep in during droughts and
streaks alike — the deviation log
(
disc-journaling-review) prices the leak. - Static playbooks: setups decay
(
philosophy-adaptive-markets) — the curation loop is maintenance, not optional review.
Evidence & limits
The playbook framework is practitioner canon (labeled); its measurable content — setup-tagged expectancy, deviation costs — is auditable per account, which is where the platform converts convention into evidence. Specific setups’ edges carry their own entries’ evidence and limits.
Falsifiable-thesis examples
Illustrations only, not signals:
- “Setup-tagged trades outperform untagged (improvised) trades in this ledger over the year (repertoire-value audit)” — falsified by the tagged comparison.
- “Cutting the bottom-quartile setup raises account expectancy within two quarters (curation-loop check)” — falsified by the before/after ledger.
