Consolidated tape & NBBO
Definition
The consolidated tape is the unified public record of US equity quotes and trades across all exchanges, and the NBBO — National Best Bid and Offer — is its headline: the best displayed bid and ask anywhere, the reference price against which executions are benchmarked, price improvement is measured, and (under Reg NMS) trade-throughs are prohibited. Every price the platform ingests is a product of this plumbing, so its mechanics — what the tape includes, when it lags, what it cannot see — are data- quality facts, not trivia.
How it works / structure
- The architecture (Reg NMS): exchanges feed quotes
and trades to consolidated processors; the NBBO is
computed from DISPLAYED, automated, round-lot quotes;
the order-protection rule bars executing through a
better displayed price; off-exchange trades
(
ms-dark-pools-ats) print to the tape post-trade. - What the NBBO excludes (engine-relevant): hidden and reserve orders; odd-lot quotes (long-documented gap — odd-lot trades print, odd-lot quotes historically didn’t inform the NBBO; reforms in progress); depth beyond the touch (the NBBO is one price level, not the book); and non-displayed midpoint interest — the true market is tighter and deeper than the NBBO in liquid names.

When it applies
Data-pipeline literacy (what the platform’s price series actually measure); execution benchmarking (improvement vs a one-level reference); microstructure feature construction (spread, depth, and print-sequence features inherit the tape’s inclusions and lags); dislocation forensics (tape anomalies — late prints, crossed NBBOs — as data-quality flags).
Risk profile & failure modes
- Reference-price reification: the NBBO is a
regulatory construct, not the full market — models
treating it as complete liquidity misprice both spread
cost and available size (
ms-liquidity). - Latency blindness: strategies backtested on consolidated timestamps assume a simultaneity that doesn’t exist at speed — fine at the platform’s swing/position horizons, fatal at microseconds; the KB’s horizon discipline keeps this a documentation issue, not a live risk.
- Crossed/locked states: stressed tape shows crossed NBBOs and stale quotes — dislocation-period features need data-quality gates, not naive ingestion.
- Odd-lot era effects: high-priced names trade heavily in odd lots — historical spread/size series under-represent them; long lookbacks cross rule-change boundaries (labeled data-era discipline).
Evidence & limits
Reg NMS and the processor architecture are SEC-documented; the two-tier feed structure and odd-lot gaps are documented in rulemaking records; market-data reform (competing consolidators, depth and odd-lots in consolidated data) is in progress — the entry carries the stable architecture and flags the moving parts.
